Haitian Earthquake Relief Initiative

What we can do

The catastrophic earthquake in Haiti and ensuing devastation
has created an enormous need for humanitarian aid. To help
meet the overwhelming needs of the Haitian people the Lake
Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club has begun its Haitian Earthquake
Relief Initiative.  The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary is raising
funds to purchase Shelter Boxes. The international relief
agency Feed the Children, has called the Shelter Box the best
disaster relief tool they have seen in their 20 years of experience.

A Shelter Box costs $1000 and contains the following:
•       A ten person tent
•      Vinyl insulated sleeping mats and lightweight
thermal blanket
•      Multi-fueled cook stove
•      Eating utensils: enamel plates/cups
•      Water purification tablets
•      Other emergency survival equipment -rope, shovel

The Shelter Box organization is working with Rotary
International and the 15 Rotary Clubs in Haiti to deliver and
distribute this desperately needed emergency relief, as seen on
CNN and Fox News.

Rotary’s Haitian Earthquake Relief Initiative is Joined by Local Schools

We have been gratified by the outpouring of support for our Haitian Earthquake Relief Initiative.  We have been joined by Lake Forest High School, District #65, District #67 and Lake Forest Academy to purchase Shelter Boxes for the people of Haiti.  On Saturday, January 30th, the students will be out in our community collecting for this fundraising effort.  CROYA is also participating by holding a Haitian Hustle dance in support of this initiative.

Our effort has gone national, as well.  We have partnered with the Mountain Empire Rotary Club in Sonoita, Arizona. Our partnership allows us to maximize our giving by qualifying for additional matching grants available from Rotary International.

It is gratifying to see the outpouring of support from our community partners and other Rotarians. This shows the true spirit and power of people joining together to help those in need.
