Reading Power is expanding to provide more students the priceless gift of literacy

Reading Power is an independent, individualized literacy program tutoring children in prekindergarten through grade two.  Working in partnership with underserved schools, one-to-one tutoring is provided during the school day.

Our mission is to accelerate children's literacy learning and to develop in them a love of reading and writing. We believe that all children deserve to reach their intellectual potential.

Reading Power serves the children of North Chicago and Zion, Illinois by providing early literacy interventions to pre-kindergarten (North Chicago only), kindergarten, first, and second grade students.

Kathy became a Reading Power tutor in 2011 and joined the Board of Directors in 2013. She was elected CEO and Chairman of the Board in 2014 and also chairs the Strategy Committee. Kathy’s background spans a 35-year career in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries where she held executive positions in product development, project management, and manufacturing. During her tenure at Abbott, Kathy also developed a passion for mentoring and creating programs to remove barriers to allow people to achieve their full potential.  Upon her retirement, she continued this passion and became a tutor for Reading Power.  She has her PhD in organic chemistry.

Tom began tutoring in 2014 and joined the Board in 2017. Tom retired in 2014 from a forty-year career in financial services, thirty of those years with Goldman Sachs. His career included institutional sales, sales management, recruiting and training. He has been active on two college parent advisory boards, and has been a fundraiser for several secondary schools, colleges, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
